Guidelines for Authors

The Journal of Laban Movement Studies is published annually by the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS), carries scholarly articles, book reviews, reports of scholarly conferences, archives, and other projects of interest to the field. Contributions for publication consideration are open to both members and nonmembers of LIMS, and will be accepted at any time.

The Journal of Laban Movement Studies considers for publication original manuscripts on topics and issues related to the theoretical, methodological, historical, and practical aspects of Rudolf Laban’s movement analysis, and its applications. Articles may present current research, scholarly reviews, or a practical approach to a practice, research, or teaching methodology. The following presentation style should be observed when submitting manuscripts:

Research articles should present a comprehensive report of the research, include an introduction to the investigation and the rationale for the research, a methods section that describes the data collection, a results section describing the study's findings, a discussion section that correlates the results with the findings in other investigations, and a summary and/or conclusions section. The style and content of historical/theoretical papers should follow the respective presentation formats for those fields/areas.

Review articles should be comprehensive and provide a synthesis of the currently available information the purpose of which should be to provide the reader with an overview of the current knowledge on the topic. Review articles must include appropriate headings and reference citations. They should begin with a general introduction and conclude with a summary.

Practical articles should present a thorough review of a procedure or practice explained in sufficient detail to allow the reader to readily apply the information. These articles may be written in a "how I do it" format. References should be included when necessary to support assertions or quotations.

The journal will also consider the submission of book reviews, meeting reviews, editorials and other commentaries, letters to the editor, as well as other short reports.

Manuscript Preparation

Each manuscript should be submitted in triplicate along with a copy of the word processor file in rich text format (rtf) submitted on a floppy disk.
The cover sheet of each submission should include: 1) title of the article, 2) names and academic affiliations of all authors, 3) the corresponding author's mailing address (and email
address if available), phone number, fax number, and 4) the address for correspondence reprint requests (which will be published on the first page of each article).
Submissions should be formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition (author-date citation system). Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced on 8 1⁄2 x 11 paper with one-inch margins throughout the entire document.
All submissions must be accompanied by an abstract of 50 to 100 words and biographical information of not more than ten lines that includes current evidence of expertise in the topic of the article.

Illustrations

Illustrations should be submitted in triplicate as 5 x 7 glossy photographs. Illustrations in digital form can be submitted in a variety of formats and can be submitted on floppy, CD, or zip disks. Authors must obtain permission to publish photographs and illustrations if taken by individuals other than themselves. Most file formats can be accommodated, however the tif/tiff format is preferred and we discourage the use of jpg and gif formats. If you have a question about a specific format you plan to submit, please consult the editor.

Copyright Agreement

A cover letter must be submitted, indicating intent to have the manuscript [title of article], including text and artwork, considered for publication by the Journal of Laban Movement Studies. The undersigned author warrants and represents that the article is original, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been published previously. I sign for and accept responsibility for releasing this material on behalf of all co-authors and myself.

The Journal of Laban Movement Studies is a refereed publication, using a blind review process. The Editor and at least one outside reader independently review all articles before an editorial decision is made. Authors are advised of the editorial decision as soon as it is available. The review process is completed as quickly as possible, and every attempt is made to notify authors regarding acceptance within three months. The Editor reserves the right to reject or return for revision any material on the grounds of inappropriate subject matter, quality, or length.
